Fable: The Dumb Government

60 years ago this year, two years before the invention of the chip, a government signed a contract with a telecommunications organisation to work on the development of an IC.

That same year, the telecommunications organisation showed off a non-working demonstration model of a chip.

The model was very similar to the chip which received the patent on the IC two years later.

Although the US interest in the 1957 model was intense, the government involved in developing the model declined to provide the funds to develop a working version.

Moral: Governments can be dumb.

  1. Yes indeed! Jamo, the Dumb Government was our government. Some things don’t change.

  2. Geoffrey Dummer or G.W. Dummer as you oft see as a UK semiconductor authority during the 60s and 70s.
