  2. A wise man from the Bank of England once told me that it was his opinion that labour is too cheap in the UK to encourage investment in automation.

    Not just low wages, but it is also low cost to hire and fire. It is much more flexible for businesses to hire more effort to deliver manufacturing output, and lay it off when demand drops, rather than invest in automation and tooling which might have lower operating costs when the demand is there, but you’re stuck with a white elephant in the downturns.

    Interesting to see that only the US has lower employment cost than the UK in the list – although I’m not sure about Taiwan.

  3. Not a surprise the UK isn’t on the list. Many of our traditional industries died during the post-war period up to the 1970s due to a lack of capital investment and serious productivity improvement initiatives.
    Now primarily a service based economy the opportunities for automation are less clear.
