Microchip hardware measures power for code optimisation

Microchip has announced a development board that links code to power consumption to help cut embedded system energy.

Called Real ICE Power Monitor Module, it is designed to work with the firm’s Real ICE in-circuit emulator and MPLAB X integrated development environment (IDE).

“This development platform allows users to measure, graphically profile and optimise code power consumption for all of Microchip’s 8, 16 and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers,” said the firm.

It provides programmable power to the target (1.25 to 5.5V at up to 1A), enabling users to run at specific voltage levels, and can set sampling intervals (10bit resolution at 1MHz acquisition, or 12bit at 500kHz).

Time stamping has 100ns resolution, and statistical analysis (max, min, average, high, low, standard deviation) is available on power measurements.

There is an output for arming the trigger of a scope.

List price for the part (AC244008) is $379.99, and applications are expected developing battery-powered, digital power-supply, motor-control and metering products.
