MWC: Imagination’s small 6XE PowerVR

Intended for wearables and low-end phones, PowerVR G6020 is Imagination Technologies’ smallest Series6XE graphics processor.

Designed to deliver 720p video at 60frame/s, the graphics processor (GPU) is OpenGLES 3.0-capable, and offers 400-500Mpixel/s (2.2mm2 silicon on 28nm) as well as 12.8-16Gflop (16bit) at 400-500MHz.

Embedded and IoT applications are also foreseen. “Think trip computers for affordable cars, smart appliances inside the home, multi-purpose printers and scanners – anything that needs a screen,” said Imagination. “Reduce the clock rate to a few hundred MHz, and you might find it is also a suitable graphics processor for next-generation high-end wearables.”

The previously announced Series5XE-based GX5300 GPU is the firm’s mainstream wearable GPU. G6020 is said to provide 2x performance at a similar process node and improving battery life.

Operation under real-time operating systems as well as Android, Android Wear and Linux are proposed.

At the same time, Imagination announced three PowerVR Series5 video encoders for H.265 and H.264.

PowerVR E5800, E5505 and E5300 are flexible and offer performance spanning 720p at 30frame/s (for wearables) to 4k at 60frame/s and 10bit for medical imaging or professional broadcast.

E5800: 4k 60frame/s 10bit enabling ITU-R rec BT.2020 video stream compliance

E5505: 4K 30frame/s for tablets, phones, home media gateways and security cameras

E5300: 1080p 60frame/s for wearables, camera-equipped IoT devices, entry-level mobile, automotive.
