Abacus Polar goes forth into Europe
Richard Wilson A new two hundred million pound distribution alliance sallied forth into Europe on Monday. Abacus Polar, the UK’s largest independent distributor, has teamed up with one of Germany’s largest distributors, Rutronik in a partnership covering over 75 per cent of the European component distribution market. The two companies will offer 164 different franchises in 57 European locations. Of the products, 56 per cent will be semiconductors, 26 per cent will be passive components while electromechanical products represent eight per cent. “The two companies will be able to offer higher inventory availability for customers across Europe,” said Brian Murdoch, chief executive of Abacus Polar, adding: ” We will also explore how we can develop our franchise base through the alliance.” As well as the UK and Germany, the alliance covers the French market, through Rutronik’s Dimacel subsidiary, and the Nordic countries through the UK firm’s Promax subsidiary. Based on 1997 sales, the deal creates Europe’s sixth largest component distributor.
