AEA trials lighter ‘space’ batteries
Steve Bush AEA Technology and the British National Space Centre are carrying out a programme to put lithium ion (Liion) batteries in space. “Liion batteries are significantly lighter than other suitable types, but have not been used in space before,” said Rob Spurrett, a spokesman for AEA. “Nickel hydrogen is pretty well the space battery and NiCds are also used, but they still get memory problems – although these are easy to get around.”
