Air debate gains pace
Jon Mainwaring The air interface protocol debate for third generation mobile telecommunications continues apace. Although the European telecoms body ETSI thought it had settled the issues when it included W-CDMA and the TD/CDMA protocols for the third generation standard, questions are now being asked as to how it will be implemented. Some quarters within ETSI want to make the unpaired portion of the radio spectrum, used for private networks, more in line with W-CDMA which is being used for the paired, public, part of the spectrum. This will further delay the detailed third generation specification expected next year.
