Altera sets up logic centre
Richard Ball A technical centre dedicated to European users of programmable logic is being set up by Altera. Located at the company’s UK headquarters in High Wycombe, the centre will provide support for hardware and software. This is Altera’s second R&D centre outside of the US. The first was opened in Malaysia in 1996. “We want to have ten to 15 people in place by the year end,” said Nigel Toon, managing director for Altera in Europe. Numbers will rise to around 50 in two years. Like other companies setting up technical centres in the UK, Altera will face the obstacle of a skills shortage. “It’s a tough environment,” admitted Toon. “But I think we can offer interesting and challenging projects for people who want to be involved.” The company is prepared to recruit direct from universities in order to find the staff it needs. Much of the work at the centre will be in the development of megafunctions – Altera’s range of soft cores for its FPGAs.
