Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has come up with a new brand name for the extended MMX instruction set that will be a feature of its forthcoming K6-3D microprocessors, and says it has reached an agreement with rivals National Semiconductor and IDT on using the same MMX extensions.
The addition of 21 MMX instructions will speed the processing of 3D graphics images and is marketed as 3DNow! AMD is trying to promote the MMX extensions among leading PC game developers, which it hopes will write new games to take advantage of the extra instructions, and in turn, drive demand for AMD based PC systems.
National Semiconductor and IDT have agreed to use the same extended MMX instructions despite originally developing their own extensions, and will team with AMD on joint marketing promotions for 3DNow!
