AMD plans to lay off 300 staff
Tom Foremski Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is laying off 300 staff as it warns of a large loss for its current fiscal quarter. The staff lay offs are not in its core microprocessor business, but the company also warned that it has run into production problems for its K6 family and will not meet expected shipment targets. “We expect to ship no more than five million units of AMD-K6 family products in the first quarter,” said Atiq Raza, AMD co-chief operating officer and chief technical officer. “We believe we will meet our goal of shipping 20 to 25 million processors this year,” he added. Analysts expect AMD to recover, however, as it currently dominates the low end PC processor market.
