Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will officially announce its latest high end microprocessor, the K6-III today.
The announcement is timed to coincide with Intel’s announcement that the first Pentium III based systems are being shipped. AMD says that at 400MHz, the K6-III matches the performance of the Pentium III, and it is preparing faster versions due within the next four weeks.
AMD hopes that the fast K6-III will allow it to break out of the low end consumer PC market and attract systems builders selling into corporate markets, where Intel has a very strong franchise. Unlike the Pentium III, the K6-III does not have an electronic ID number, a controversial feature that has drawn fire from consumer privacy organisations.
