AMD to sell its chip subsidiary, Vantis

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will sell its programmable logic chip subsidiary Vantis for $500m to Lattice Semiconductor.
The cash deal will provide AMD with capital to fund its competition with Intel and to focus more closely on its microprocessor business. AMD has been preparing Vantis for spin-off for about a year.
“This is clearly a major strategic move for Lattice,” said Lattice CEO Cyrus Tsui. “With significantly expanded R&D and sales organisations, we will now be able to increase new product development efforts and deliver innovative, higher density programmable solutions to customers sooner. As a result, we will become a stronger and more viable competitor and offer a broader range of programmable devices.”
AMD needs capital to expand its fabs and bring in new process technologies as Intel steps up its efforts in introducing faster microprocessors.
