AMD wins patent appeal
Tom Foremski A US court of appeal has overturned a lower court decision in a patent dispute between Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Altera. The court ruled that AMD subsidiary Vantis owns the rights to eight patents covering programmable logic devices (PLDs). The ruling also confirms an earlier judgement that AMD has the licence to five Altera patents. The latest ruling is part of a lawsuit that was first filed in 1994 by AMD. An earlier trial had ruled in favour of Altera and ruled it had licence to the AMD patents. The deal is significant because Vantis competes with Altera in the PLD sector.
