Awards to get image change
Political correspondent The Queen’s Awards for Export and Technology are to be jazzed up in a bid to attract more leading edge electronics companies. Currently applications for the two awards are in decline and the revamp aims to attract more small entrepreneurial companies, UK-based operations of multinational companies and IT firms. At the beginning of the 1990s more than 1,000 businesses applied for the export award and almost 400 for the technology award. Last year the figures were 864 and 207, respectively, and sources say there has been a further sharp drop this year. Roger Watson, the Trade and Industry Department civil servant said a Review Committee, which has met once so far, wanted to broaden the awards’ appeal to attract smaller entrepreneurial firms, especially in electronics and high-tech.
