Roy Rubenstein Trade president Margaret Beckett is bidding for ?3bn to finance extra high-tech research, especially in the electronics and IT fields. As the cabinet battle for long-term funds under the Comprehensive Spending Review hots up, she is determined to secure money to develop the UK’s long term technological research. She is hoping to double the DTI’s budget with a massive boost to leading edge technological research. Beckett is also arguing that this type of work is vital to Britain’s future as a top industrial and technological nation. Although she is unlikely to get the full-funding asked for, officials hope that prime minister Tony Blair’s emphasis on a modern high-tech Britain will ensure she gets enough to provide the type of boost to electronics and IT missing under the Tories.
