BIOS merger seeks lower costs

PC BIOS chip firms Phoenix Technologies and Award Software International have agreed to merge.
The new firm will retain the Phoenix name aand the deal is considered to be a good one by industry analysts, who point out that while Phoenix targets the high end PC market, Award focuses on the fast growing low end PC market.
Phoenix said that market demands to produce BIOS chips for new platforms such as Intel’s Merced, low-end computing devices and support for FireWire and operating systems such as Microsoft’s Windows CE, promoted the merger. The combined company will be able to develop BIOS chip products at a lower cost.
