Tom Foremski sBT and AT&T are to take a 30 per cent stake in Japan Telecom, worth ?1.2bn in the first big investment into the Japanese telecoms market by western companies The two firms will jointly manage their investment, with Japan Telecom becoming the sole distributor of BT and AT&T branded services. Peter Bonfield, BT’s chief executive, said: “The partnership between Japanese, European and US companies is ground breaking in telecoms and builds substantially on BT’s growing presence in Asia.” The agreement includes a BT stake in the Japan Telecom-led third generation mobile consortium, which will be applying for a licence in Japan in the next year.
