Budget winners – mobiles no longer a scourge
Richard Wilson
Along with all the talk of a penny of the rate of income tax, mortgage tax relief and petrol duty, Gordon Brown’s Budget contained one or two interesting nuggets for mobile phone companies, smartcard developers and the IT sector.
The mobile phone market should receive a boost from the news that mobile phones provided by companies will no longer be seen as a taxable benefit for the user. This indicates that the present Chancellor does not view the mobile phone as “the scourge of modern life” as Norman Lamont famously commented, back in 1991 when he imposed the mobile phone tax.
It is estimated to affect just 350,000 company mobile users, but expectations are that this figure could now spiral as employees rush to accept any mobile giveaways from their companies.
