Bug won’t hit telephones says watchdog

UK public telephone networks should be Year 2000 compliant by September, according to Oftel, the industry watchdog.
Oftel said 90 per cent of the public telephone networks were already Year 2000 compliant. This follows an assessment by Action 2000, the government’s Millennium Bug agency. Oftel said all the major fixed networks, all 999 emergency services and all four mobile phone networks had been checked and there was no risk of disruption from the Millennium Bug.
Action 2000 also said that key sections of the UK’s infrastructure were on track to avoid any problems due to the computer date change phenomenon.
