Cable firms will offer VoD in 2000
Melanie Reynolds All the main UK cable operators will offer video-on-demand (VoD) services by the end of next year. Telewest and Cable & Wireless (C&W) confirmed next year’s date while NTL would only say it will be available sometime after the autumn. VoD delivers films to the viewer’s home as and when requested. Since it requires a significant broadband capability the service is best suited to cable. Digital satellite provider BSkyB and digital terrestrial firm ONdigital provide near-video-on-demand services which deliver films at scheduled times only. All three cable operators plan near-video-on-demand from this autumn. C&W sees the rolling out of its interactive services, such as home banking and shopping, as a higher priority than VoD. “The reason we’re holding back is simply because of the capacity it eats up,” said a C&W spokesman. “We could do it but it just eats up too many megabits.”
