Cable sector all shook-up by merger
Richard Wilson The cable communications sector has seen one of its largest corporate shake-ups to date with the merger of Telewest Communications with General Cable. Telewest has agreed to pay ?650m for the UK business of General Cable creating potentially the market’s second largest cable communications group, just a whisker behind market leader Cable & Wireless Communications, itself the product of the merger of four operators in 1996. Both of the market’s two ‘super groups’ each have franchises covering six million homes.
