Cambridge automotive telematics venture
Richard Ball Amino Communications and Fleetwood Electronics have announced a joint venture to develop automotive telematics systems. The Cambridge-based firms have been working together for a year on the project developing systems using Amino’s modular hardware. “We’ve put together a touch panel-based in-vehicle terminal,” said John Clarfelt, MD of Fleetwood. The system takes data from a variety of inputs, including global positioning sensors, flow meters and interfaces to engine management systems. The data is sent back to the transport firm’s headquarters, allowing it to track goods, monitor vehicles and keep customers up to date on deliveries. The problem with these types of systems, said Clarfelt, “is as soon as you build a system, someone else wants something different”. The touch panel allows the control buttons for the system to be on-screen, allowing different applications to be developed without changing the core hardware.
