Cambridge struggles to keep up with popularity
Melanie Reynolds Cambridge now has the greatest concentration of high-tech firms in Europe and is facing a crisis as the demands of industry battle with the city’s tight planning constraints. “The University is producing a large number of very motivated highly sought after graduates so at the moment businesses are still very much looking to Cambridge,” said a Cambridge University spokeswoman. “But it’s not just a question of business. It’s also a question of where their staff live.” The problem is of such concern that a group called Cambridge Futures has been formed to investigate the city’s future. Using computer simulation models, the group has predicted the economic, social and environmental consequences of seven planning options ranging from building a new town on the outskirts to developing a virtual highway.
