CD-ROM hits DVD
Tom Foremski The popularity of rewritable CD-ROM (CD-RW) systems will slow sales of DVD technology, according to a report from US market research firm International Data Corp (IDC). IDC does not question that DVD-ROM will displace CD-ROM drives, which will reach sales of 32.4 million units by 2001. However, CD-RW is becoming a short term obstacle to DVD adoption, it said. “Read only has always been considered a major drawback for CD technology,” said Wolfgang Schlichting, senior analyst at IDC.
