Chancellor is assured by Hyundai over Scottish fab plans
Richard Wilson
Chancellor Gordon Brown has been assured by Hyundai that the South Korean firm’s ?2bn semiconductor plant being built in Scotland will eventually be completed despite the damaging financial effects of the current economic crisis in Korea.
He received the assurance during a visit to Korea where he spent some time discussing the future of the Dunfermline plant that could create up to 1,800 jobs, but which has yet to have any wafer production equipment installed.
The belief is that Hyundai will not put the plant into production before 2000 at the earliest, when it will be used for the next generation of 256Mbit DRAMs.
