Consortium seeks uniformity in smart cards

Hoping to jumpstart smart card applications in the US, twelve companies announced support for OpenCard Framework 1.0, making it easier to develop smart card applications.
OpenCard Framework was developed by the newly formed OpenCard Consortium, which includes Bull Personal Transaction Systems, Dallas Semiconductor, First Access, Gemplus, IBM, NCI, Netscape Communications, Schlumberger, SCM Microsystems, Sun Microsystems, UbiQ, and Visa International.
The goal is to unify smart card development on a single format rather than have several different and competing development systems, which industry observers say, has slowed the take off of smart cards in the US.
