Apple Computer will give the first public demonstration next week of an IBM PowerPC microprocessor built using IBM’s copper interconnect technology
During a keynote address by Apple Interim-CEO Steve Jobs, the company will show a prototype Power Macintosh running on the copper PowerPC microprocessor at about 400MHz. The demonstration is a bid by Apple to hold onto professionals in the publishing and video production markets where it still has a major lead over Intel based systems.
IBM announced last year that it had achieved a breakthrough in using copper in chips instead of aluminium. Copper’s superior conductivity boosts chip performance without requiring a major redesign.
