CPS locates 250 mobile trialists
Steve Bush Cambridge Positioning Systems’ (CPS) forthcoming mobile phone location system trial will involve 250 corporate users. To be based in a 15km2 area of greater Cambridge, the summer trial will offer services based on the users’ current location. “We will be offering ‘Where am I…’, ‘Where is the nearest…’, and ‘How do I get to…’ services through a call centre,” said company marketing manager Melanie Cox. All of these services will be based around CPS’s Cursor system which uses modified handsets and additional basestation hardware to locate handsets with a claimed 125m accuracy. During the trial, the location service will be free, and part of its aim is to explore charging models for the national roll-out “before the end of this year”, claimed Cox. The whole country could be covered by 2001, said Cox.
