C&W to buy MCI’s Web service
Alex Mayhew-Smith Cable & Wireless is to purchase the Internet service of US operator MCI for $625m. The deal will give Britain’s second biggest telecoms company a leading Internet business in and out of Europe. Cable & Wireless’s gain is the result of MCI’s need to dispel regulatory concerns over its merger with US-based WorldCom. The sale came days after Karel Van Miert, the European antitrust chief, said that any overlap in the Internet backbone business between MCI and WorldCom must be eliminated.
