C&W to cut workforce by 12 per cent
Richard Wilson Cable & Wireless Communications has responded to the competitive pressure in the cable communications market by making a 12 per cent cut in its UK workforce. The redundancies, which will affect 1,500 jobs. This comes on top of over 1,000 staff cuts which have been carried out since the formation of CWC in 1996, when Cable & Wireless merged its UK telephony business with UK cable companies Nynex, Bell Cablemedia and Videotron. CWC is facing stiff competition from satellite TV as well as BT, which is currently in price-cutting mode.
