Date threat facing GPS

Date threat facing GPS
Tom Foremski A US government agency has warned of a date problem similar to the Millenium Bug that could cause global position system (GPS) receivers to malfunction. The General Accounting Office (GAO) told a congressional panel that on August 21, a date roll over will occur. The problem is due to the GPS system counting time in seconds and weeks. After 1,024 weeks starting from January 6, 1980, the GPS system clocks reset to zero – an event certain receivers are unprepared for. The Air Transport Association says that while many commercial flights use GPS navigation aids, the date reset problem should only affect low-end receivers. Airlines have known about the issue for some time.
