DEC hunts for Alpha second sources

Digital Equipment is pulling out all the stops in its efforts to find second source manufacturers for its Alpha microprocessor, in order to fulfil an order from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as it prepares to merge with Compaq Computer.
Sources close to Digital report that it is close to finalising an agreement with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) under which AMD would manufacture the Alpha microprocessor. The FTC has balked at Intel becoming the major supplier of Alpha microprocessors under a patent dispute settlement agreed last year.
Digital is also reported to be in talks with IBM to manufacture Alpha, possibly using IBM’s copper interconnect technology which would boost Alpha chip performance, already amongst the highest in the industry.
