Digital cellular arena grows 48%
David Manners Production of digital cellular phones is expected to grow 48 per cent in Europe this year, representing almost 60 per cent of world production, says Texas Instruments (TI). This will drive 1998 European semiconductor market growth to between 12 and 14 per cent; more than double the growth for the world market. Europe’s mobile phone market is being spurred by manufacturers Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens, and operators Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telecom Italia Mobile and Telia, says TI. Contributing to Europe’s semiconductor growth this year is a PC market, forecast to grow 16 to 17 per cent, as is the automotive semiconductor market. TI also highlighted asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modems as offering new opportunities. TI has recently been involved in discussions with key European telecom operators and EU officials over early implementation of ADSL which, the company believes, is the only affordable, ubiquitous high-speed Internet access technology available before the decade’s end.
