DVD Forum starts work on more capacity
Tom Foremski
The DVD Forum reports that it is working on a higher capacity DVD RAM format, which might also help to bring back members such as Sony and Philips that have abandoned an earlier, more limited DVD RAM format.
The new focus for the group is a 4.7Gbyte DVD RAM format that would offer about twice the capacity of the earlier DVD RAM format. Sony, Philips and Hewlett-Packard recently said they would develop a rerecordable format based on different technology that would hold 3Gbytes of data and would be compatible with DVD ROM and CD Recordable formats.
The DVD Forum says it will have the first version of its new DVD RAM format ready within the next year.
