Ericsson lines up ADSL chips
Roy Rubenstein Ericsson Microelectronics will become an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) transceiver chipset supplier. “We are actively looking and we have the competence,” said Mikael Wikman, Ericsson Components’ datacomm IC product manager. But he would not say when the company will introduce its first offerings. The company currently develops line drivers for ADSL and has the required A/D and D/A converter expertise. What it is missing is a “DSP and a lot of the software”. Wikman confirmed that the company has yet to select a DSP device for its chipset. Ericsson’s entry into the ADSL market will put it head-to-head with the likes of Texas Instruments, Analog Devices and Alcatel which has licensed its technology to STMicroelectronics, AMD and Toshiba.
