ESDRAM socks it to Rambus
Jon Mainwaring VLSI Technology and Enhanced Memory Systems are supplying enhanced synchronous DRAM (ESDRAM), which they claim has a 1.6Gbyte/s peak bandwidth and over twice the sustained bandwidth of the Rambus DRAM. Enhanced will supply the ESDRAM products supported by VLSI Technology’s Polaris VCS164 system controller. The ESDRAM products have initial random latency of less than 35ns, which the companies say is approximately 1.6 times faster than standard SDRAM and two times faster than Rambus DRAM. “The Enhanced SDRAM is the first SDRAM to address the problems of memory latency and fast I/O delays needed to achieve high frequency operation,” said Kevin Mankin, VLSI Technology’s vice-president of Enterprise Products. First target applications are for Windows NT PCs based on high-speed processors like Digital’s Alpha 21164PC.
