Fab move presages rethink at Intel

Intel has stopped construction of a $1.3bn fab in Texas in an ominous sign of a possible major restructuring of manufacturing operations at Intel as it adapts to changing market conditions.
Intel says that it has delayed the opening of the fab by two years and will use the time to switch the plant from the planned 200 mm production line, to 300 mm wafer processing lines, giving it better manufacturing efficiencies.
The Texas fab has already been delayed once before. Last October Intel said that the fab would open one year later than planned because of a switch in its plans for the manufacture of flash memory chips.
