Chip fab workers at eight LG Semicon fab lines walked off the job on Tuesday as part of a strike that protests the government ordered merger of LG Semicon with Hyundai Electronics.
LG Semicon workers are concerned that the merger will result in large numbers of layoffs and they want job guarantees from Hyundai. Although Hyundai has promised not to lay off fab workers following the merger, it says it cannot make long term guarantees of job security.
The strike could result in good news for memory chip makers who continue to suffer from an over supply of DRAMs worldwide. By shutting LG Semicon’s fabs, DRAM supply may come closer to demand and result in price increases for the first time in years.
