Filtronic Comtek is cutting 40 jobs at its ferrite division based in Stewarton and Hamilton in Scotland. The division was set up to produce components for internal use but was expanded last year to manufacture for other companies, particularly European ones.
The company blames the job losses on the high value of the sterling. The company now plans to return to manufacturing ferrites for internal use. Almost all the staff being laid off are casual labour.
‘This was an interesting side line, but it can’t really be developed at the moment,’ said Tim Linacre, a Filtronic spokesperson. ‘The core businesses are not at all, in any shape or form, affected,’ said Linacre, commenting on the Shipley and US sites.
