Former workers sue IBM over health
Tom Foremski In the US, former IBM fab workers are suing the company claiming unsafe conditions led to cancer and other serious diseases. The lawsuit, which was filed in a Silicon Valley court, claims that IBM knowingly exposed workers at its San Jose fab to toxic chemicals and “willfully and recklessly” ignored health issues associated with the chemicals. The suit was filed on behalf of former IBM staff and the families of five workers who have died from cancer. Amanda Hawes, the lawyer that filed the suit, pointed out that the protective clothing worn by clean room workers is designed to protect chips from human contamination and does nothing to protect workers from the toxic chemicals in their work environment. IBM said it does not comment on lawsuits.
