Fujitsu still hunts buyer for UK fab
Alex Mayhew-Smith To raise interest in Fujitsu’s semiconductor plant in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, the company has appointed commercial estate agent Healey & Baker to help sell the site. This development confirms that negotiations late last year with a prospective purchaser have come to nothing. “A sum of ?12m has been mentioned but the exact figure depends on negotiations,” said Len Davis, Fujitsu’s personnel director at the site. The sum will also depend on what equipment is included in the sale, added Davis. The company has been trying to find a buyer since last September and is believed to want to see its plant off the company books by April 5. The estate agent plans to contact 1,700 companies worldwide in an attempt to sell the plant and its 106-acre site, including 60 acres of developable land. Only a skeleton crew of 30 remain at the site to keep the facilities running until a buyer is found.
