The UK’s General Electric Company (GEC) says it will acquire US based network equipment company Fore Systems in a deal valued at $4.5bn.
GEC says that Fore’s IP and ATM communications technologies will make a good match with its Marconi subsidiary in taking advantage of expanding markets in Internet communications backbones.
“This acquisition reinforces our position as a leading supplier of voice and data networking technology,” said George Simpson, Chief Executive of GEC. ” This is also a big boost to MARCONI Communications’ already considerable technology base. We will now be in a position to capture the full benefits of the impact of the explosive growth of Internet and other data traffic on the demand for communications equipment and systems.”
GEC last month said it will acquire telecoms systems company Reltec for $1.74bn as it pushes ahead into key markets through an aggressive acquisitions strategy.
