Gemplus arm drives smartcard adoption
Melanie Reynolds Gemplus has formed a software division to help spur the development of smartcard applications. “We want to drive new markets and applications for cards,” said Philippe Maes, senior vice-president of the new division called Gemplus Software. “Gemplus cannot stay and wait for other people to take the initiative and decide what we do in the future.” The development reflects Gemplus’ plan to shift from being a smartcard manufacturer to a solutions provider. “This is an important indication of where we’ll be going,” said Maes. The division, based in France, will offer software products based around smartcards and readers. It will support open systems and standardisation which Maes believes are the key if smartcards are to be adopted in new markets and applications.
