David Manners The world chip industry will hardly grow at all this year, if the industry’s performance so far, continues. The biggest growth area is Europe; the biggest fall is in Japan. SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association of the US) figures show that average monthly sales of chips in November, December and January were down by $1bn a month on the August, September, October period. The decline was steepest in Japan with a 14.3 per cent drop in sales between the two, three month, periods. January 1998’s worldwide sales were nearly three per cent up on those of January 1997, said the SIA. While Japan’s January chip sales showed a 12.8 per cent decline on January 1997, America’s grew 7.3 per cent, Asia/Pac’s 7 per cent and Europe’s 12.8 per cent. Compared to December’s sales, every region showed a decline in January. In Japan by 7 per cent, in Asia/Pac by 6.5 per cent, in America by 3 per cent and in Europe by 2.2 per cent.
