Government ignores mobile phone pleas
Richard Wilson The government has ignored the concerns of the mobile phone industry in confirming that five operator licences for 3rd generation mobile phone services will be auctioned later this year. The decision will guarantee at least one new mobile phone operator in the UK which is already one of the most competitive in Europe with four service providers. But industry experts claim that the spectrum being offered is inadequate. Last month the UMTS Forum, which represents the interests of Europe’s mobile phone manufacturers and operators, warned that having too many licences would “seriously jeopardise” the rollout of 3rd generation mobile services. “You can’t just subdivide spectrum into little pieces and expect a flourishing business,” said Dr Bernd Eylert, chairman of the UMTS Forum. Government will also give all new entrants the right to make use of one of the four existing GSM networks.
