Steve Bush Enermet, a Swedish energy measurement company, is to build a GSM communication capability into domestic electricity meters for the local market. In a $19m deal, it will use Ericsson’s GM 12 Short Message Service GSM modules which will allow electricity meters to be read remotely, and also bring new services into the home. “We are looking forward to other coming applications, which can be used in the future,” said Bengt Sundling, president of Enermet. “With the GSM module is in place, other services for the home can be applied. The equipment has two further inputs which can, for instance, be used for fire and burglar alarms.” This, claims Ericsson, will be the first application where machines will communicate together via GSM without human intervention.
