HDTV to start in US
Tom Foremski HDTV broadcasts will start in the US this autumn, according to technology developer the Sarnoff Corporation. The announcement counters a general scepticism about the future of HDTV (see EW, March 18, p6). “The US is going to have the best TV system in the world,” boasted Glenn Reitmeier, Sarnoff’s v-p for high definition and multimedia systems. Sceptics say that broadcasters will shun HDTV because they can squeeze four regular TV broadcasts within the one HDTV channel. Sarnoff, which played a key part in the development of the HDTV technology, believes that broadcasters will do both.
