Highest F value ever!
Steve Bush Acal Electronics is offering the UK what is believed to be, at 100F, the highest value capacitor yet produced. It is part of capacitor-maker Elna’s Dynacap DZ range of so-called super capacitors designed for back-up use. This type of capacitor was originally developed to supply power to memory, which only consumes microamps of current, but applications are expanding as current capability and capacity increases. “They are now being used as replacements for batteries,” said Acal spokesman Brian Hayward: “The 50F capacitor in the DZ range was specifically designed to power a Japanese cordless telephone. The advantage of capacitors is that they have an almost limitless charge-discharge life, whereas rechargeable batteries eventually wear out. The disadvantage is that capacitors have a lower capacity.” The 100F device has a 2.5V maximum voltage rating and measures 35mm in diameter and is 50mm high.
