HP to support Linux
Tom Foremski Hewlett-Packard (HP) will support the Linux operating system and help port it to 64-bit Merced microprocessors. The company will offer Linux as an option on Intel-based workstations and servers, and will also work on developing a version that will run on Intel’s forthcoming 64-bit Merced microprocessor. “Demand for applications and support for Linux is growing rapidly,” said Greg Mihran, head of HP’s Internet business development division. The announcement represents a major boost for the open source code Linux operating system.
