Hughes Electronics will build a $1. 4bn in a satellite communications network that will offer high speed data communications, called Spaceway.
The first focus of Spaceway will focus on the North American market but Hughes plans to make further investments to build it into a global network. The network is scheduled for commercial introduction in 2002.
Hughes says it will work with partners to extend Skyway to overseas markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Skyway will use geosynchronous satellites and the Federal Communications Commission has already allocated orbital slots for the Hughes satellites.
Hughes, however, faces competition from other satellite communications systems such as Teledesic and others using low earth orbit satellites.
